Personal:

I was born in Moscow, Russia in '68, where I started running sprint events in '83. I moved to the US (NYC area) in '91 and didn't run again till '96 when I discovered road racing scene. I was hooked after my first 5K race. I had another break in running from '01-'04 and decided to seriously get back into it in August of '05. I'm married and have 16 year old daughter. I have moved to London in August '06, will probably stay here for a few years.

Ran in the Vets League meet. I did 100m non-scoring, and 400m as a scoring W35 A string. 100m was a lot of fun, I had a good start (without the starting blocks, but still good), but after 20m I got passed by a speedster in our club, Pam - a tall slim girl who is just built for running. I don't have official times, but I think I ran around 16.5.

I was nervous about the 400m, because I'm not doing any speedwork, and my endurance is shot. But I started not too fast, and was able to kick in the end, and only felt that dreadful lactic acid flood in the last 70m or so. I managed to get 3rd place, too! Again, no times, but I think I did around 1:20. Not great, last year I ran 1:15.6, but not too bad for my current state.

Finally, the 4 of us did 4x400m relay. Somehow, our team captain got hold of everyone's splits. Pam ran the first leg in 1:12 and got a huge lead over the other team (there were only 2 teams in this event). Then, we had a lady who is 55 or 60, not sure, run the second leg. She is a good sprinter, but didn't have enough for 400 - she almost stopped in the last 100! She ran 1:31. Then it was my turn. We still had a big lead over the second team. I ran slower than in my individual race, because I didn't feel all that great, mainly my heart rate was still high, and I was worried about overdoing it and pushing too hard. So I kept the lead, but didn't kill myself - 1:23.6. On the last leg, we had a fast girl (she ran 1:16), but the second team had one much faster! She caught our girl and passed her!! Everyone was yelling and screaming, it was a classic relay scenario - even if the speeds were slow. So we lost the relay, but it was a lot of fun. Our team won the meet, though, by 10 points!

Now, as I'm writing this a day later, I'm very sore, of course. Was walking funny today, especially after sitting down for a long time. But these meets are so fun, it's all worth it (provided I don't get injured!).

Well done Maria for your 3rd place, you're improving all the time. The meet sounds like it was great fun, worth the soreness!
