Long-Term Running Goals: I guess at this point I just want to keep running for fitness and weight control. Personal: I was born in Moscow, Russia in '68, where I started running sprint events in '83. I moved to the US (NYC area) in '91 and didn't run again till '96 when I discovered road racing scene. I was hooked after my first 5K race. I had another break in running from '01-'04 and decided to seriously get back into it in August of '05. I'm married and have 16 year old daughter. I have moved to London in August '06, will probably stay here for a few years. |

| I have a day off from work today, yay! I had a good 8 hour night sleep, and was able to do my run in the morning. Unfortunately, I haven't been feeling great lst few days, my lungs are acting up again for some reason, but I wanted to do my long run since I have the time. I decided to play it by ear, and run easy for as long as I can. Didn't feel great on first and second loop (up to 6 miles), but then suddenly felt better on the third - go figure. I felt good enough to extend a little after the third loop, and ended up with 11 miles in total. Time was slow, 1:40:51 (9:10 pace), but time on my feet is more important. My right leg still hurts since last weekend, and I think it's not soreness anymore, I might have strained my quad (or IT band?) AND hamstring at the same time! It's very unusual for me, there is localized pain in the quad on knee bending and occasional localized pain in one spot in the hamstring, but somehow I'm not too concerned. None of this makes me change my stride, so I'm hoping both of these things will work themselves out if I don't do anything crazy next week or two. I thought of running club handicap 4.3 mi. race tomorrow, but I'm scratching it now. | Comments(1) |

Ran in the light rain and cool temps. I was freezing again on the way to work - 55F!!
I ran 15 min. warmup, and then 25 min. at 8:16 pace average (3.04 mi). I felt okay, I think I made progress from last few weeks, because I ran longer and faster today. In fact, 8 sec/mile faster than last week. But my lungs are hurting since last night, maybe because of the weather change. Didn't affect my running though.

This week is really not what I planned running wise, but I had a big emergency at work (my client had produciton down with 17 factories world wide not able to do business for 6 hours). I didn't get home till 10PM and didn't get out of course. I ran today, but it'll likely be my last run of the week. I'm going to Boston/New Jersey tomorrow 7AM and staying with my cousin in Boston first 3 days. Running is not very likely.
But today I experimented with a new toy - Nike+ SportBand. I got it for free (about $80 value) when Nike reps came to work to promote the Human Race 10K and were giving out these bands in return for signing up to upload your runs to Nike website. There is a team challenge, and I'm in a team with my colleague who is not a runner but decided to run this 10K on a whim. The SportBand consists of a bracelet with removable USB-compatible chip and a foot sensor that attaches to the shoe. Of course, Nike being Nike, is pushing their own shoes, because they have a special compartment in the midsole for the sensor. But I don't run in Nike shoes, and there is no way I'm buying them just for this! The sensor doesn't have any string to attach it to the shoelaces (very clever, huh?). But people are very resourceful - I looked on the web, and found a special adapter device that allows you to attach the sensor to any shoe you want. I bought it on eBay for 5 GBP, and now I'm in business. I wore the SportBand and the Garmin today to compare the measurements. I also ran my measured 5 mile course. I felt like such a geek with 2 devices on both arms, and it was annoying having to pause and restart 2 watches every time I hit a traffic light and had to stop. I heard that the SportBand is very inaccurate. On this first run, it was a little off - it measured 4.73 mi instead of 5. I will use for this challenge, but I won't use it afterwards. It shows mileage, pace, time and calories, but you can't have splits and there is no backlighting which is a problem at night. The plus is that the band is lightweight, and the sensor does not interfere with the shoe. Overall, though, it's a gimmick, can't compete with serious training watches.
