Personal:

I was born in Moscow, Russia in '68, where I started running sprint events in '83. I moved to the US (NYC area) in '91 and didn't run again till '96 when I discovered road racing scene. I was hooked after my first 5K race. I had another break in running from '01-'04 and decided to seriously get back into it in August of '05. I'm married and have 16 year old daughter. I have moved to London in August '06, will probably stay here for a few years.

easy run with my GPS working the entire way, for a change. The outer loop of Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens is exactly 4.3mi, as Serpentine Running Club says on their web site. I felt pretty good after the long run yesterday. Time was 41:41 (8:30 pace). It's getting too warm here, supposed to be 27C tomorrow!

What kind of GPS do you have?

From Maria on Tue, Sep 05, 2006 at 09:40:19

Sasha, I have Garmin Forerunner 305. I was concerned it won't work in the UK or that I need to download some other maps into it. I called Garmin customer service before I left US, and they told me not to worry, the unit should adjust once it picks up satellite signal, and it actually doesn't have any maps in it. This was somewhat confusing to me, because when I used it in NJ and uploaded it to Garmin training center software, it showed me my route with major roads marked, so I thought it has some maps inside. Anyway, it seems to work just fine in London. Some days it takes up to an hour to get a signal but that was the case in NJ as well. I just have to remember to turn it on before I head out the door and put it next to the window, then it usually is ready by the time I need to start my run.

Maria - the map is actually stored on the Garmin website. The unit only remembers the GPS coordinates of your path. Then once you load the path to the Garmin website, it can chart out the course.

Hmm... that's not what I meant - I uploaded my info not the Garmin website, but to the training center software that comes on a CD with the unit, so it was on my local hard drive. Of course, it's possible that the software has the map stored in it... I should try uploading my London runs into the same program and see what happens.

It could also be talking with the main database via the Internet. Try disabling the Internet connection, and see if it still works.
