Personal:

I was born in Moscow, Russia in '68, where I started running sprint events in '83. I moved to the US (NYC area) in '91 and didn't run again till '96 when I discovered road racing scene. I was hooked after my first 5K race. I had another break in running from '01-'04 and decided to seriously get back into it in August of '05. I'm married and have 16 year old daughter. I have moved to London in August '06, will probably stay here for a few years.

Portugal Day 5K. As I expected, it wasn't a good race for me. 22:20, no splits since there were no mile markers. The time doesn't surprise me given lack of training this week, but I feel like I wasted a great chance to run a fast time - the course is flat and fast and the weather was almost perfect, upper 50s and sunny, only a bit too windy. I was okay for 2 miles (I think they were around 7:05), and then died on the third mile into the headwind. I had no one to run with in the end, everyone I targeted ahead I eventually passed, and then there was only a group of runners more than a hundred yards away, couldn't catch them. It seems like I can only keep it together for 2 miles, either 1 and 3, or 1 and 2.

It might not actually be as bad as you think - headwind can hurt you quite a bit. The fact that you kept passing people suggests you were running strong.

Speaking long term, though - it seems like when you run 55 miles a week you get very good results, but you are not able to do it for a long time. Is that because of work/other time issues, or just health-wise?

There are several reasons I'm not running 55 mi weeks, the main one being that I'm racing now, so the mileage had to come down from the base. I was very tired when I was doing 55 mi/week, and I wouldn't be able to run even 22 min. 5K on that. I ran my best 20K after tapering down from 55. The plan is to run 45 mi. week now, but because of health/work issues that hasn't been happening lately. And now, the move to London is not making it easier - huge hassle! My new plan is to keep around 45mi until mid July (my last 5K) and then raise the mileage again to 55-60 for couple of months.
