I guess at this point I just want to keep running for fitness and weight control.

Personal:

I was born in Moscow, Russia in '68, where I started running sprint events in '83. I moved to the US (NYC area) in '91 and didn't run again till '96 when I discovered road racing scene. I was hooked after my first 5K race. I had another break in running from '01-'04 and decided to seriously get back into it in August of '05. I'm married and have 16 year old daughter. I have moved to London in August '06, will probably stay here for a few years.

It was humid today and I didn't take it into account. Started too fast again on the faster portion and had to slow down last 2 miles. Total time 1:07:00, middle 5mi in 39:13 (7:50 pace).

How much faster did you start?

Also, it may be a good idea to see if you can find a faster training partner that will pace you through those runs.

I started at 7:40 pace and it went up to 7:50 average by the end. My last mile was 8:03. However, I ran 5 mi. tempo today vs. 4 I've been doing last week, so maybe it's not too bad. I had a great run last Friday, even pace of 7:40 over 4 mi, but today was more like last Wednesday. I think I'm running these runs too fast in general, I'm supposed to run no faster than 50 sec. slower than my 5K race pace, so about 8:00 pace (unless my fitness has improved a bit). But I never have the discipline to start that slow.

As for training partners, it would be great, but I can't really work on that until I have a permanent address. We should be moving into our new rental apartment this weekend, so after that things will become more stable (including finally getting an internet connection and not having to use internet cafes all the time!).

I think going at the pace that feels right is more important than following the book. The book is written as a general guideline. After a few years of running, your body knows more than the book. Sometimes the right thing to do may not be an even split. For example, I have run many marathons and tried different strategies - aggressive vs even/negative split. I have consistently achieved better times in marathons with the aggressive strategy. Attempts at a negative split usually ended in slowing down anyway after a slower start.
