Personal:

I was born in Moscow, Russia in '68, where I started running sprint events in '83. I moved to the US (NYC area) in '91 and didn't run again till '96 when I discovered road racing scene. I was hooked after my first 5K race. I had another break in running from '01-'04 and decided to seriously get back into it in August of '05. I'm married and have 16 year old daughter. I have moved to London in August '06, will probably stay here for a few years.

Fast finish progression run. Total 7.3mi with 1200 on the track in 5:11, one second faster than last week, but the effort seemed a bit easier. Splits were 400 - 1:42

800 - 3:29

1200 - 5:11

Also, decided to wear HRM today just to give me something to watch and keep me from getting bored. Average HR was 145 for easy segment and 171 for 1200. Max HR for 1200 hit 177. Total run time 1:04:37.

Interesting. What is your resting HR? And what is your HR at 9:00 pace?

From Maria on Sat, Oct 28, 2006 at 04:09:18

Sasha,

my resting HR (the one you take before getting out of bed in the morning, or sitting very still for few minutes) is around 50. HR at 9:00 pace would be around 140. The max. recorded so far this year is 186 (after a very hard 5K in hot and humid conditions). When I experimented last summer with keeping my HR around 125-130, I had to run ridiculously slow pace, like 10:00-10:30. I was barely sweating.

By the way, do you ever have erratic HR readings first 5 min. of your run? My HR starts out at 210-220 and after about 5 min. starts reading correctly. I have no clue why - it's been happenning both in US and UK.

Never seen anything abnormal with my Garmin 305 other than during the first 5 miles of the St. George Marathon when it appeared to be reading somebody else's HR. Possible software bug? On the About Forerunner screen on mine it says Software Version 2.40, GPS: 2.80.

Or maybe your heart is emitting signals that confuse the HRM?

One more thought - I think high HR at slow paces may have to do with the lack of sustained mileage. Our HR range is very similar (mine is 48-174), and for me 130 is not ridiculously slow at all for an easy run - I have to be going about 6:40-6:50 unless it is really hot, in which case I might get it at 7:10-7:15. It is not uncommon for me to stay under 120 for most of my easy run until I decide to chase some imaginary runner.

Maybe my HR spikes up in the beginning, I don't know, but it shouldn't be so high. Interestingly, my Garmin "about" screen says Software version 2.20, GPS: 2.40, so I have an older version. Maybe I should check on Garmin's site if there are any upgrades I can download.

You may be right about high HR at slow paces due to lack of sustained mileage. But my max. HR is 12 beats higher than yours, so all my HRs at all paces can be up to 12 beats higher, which would give me 140 at the same effort that would produce 130 for you. We'll see if my HRs drop as I keep building the mileage (although it would probably take years of high mileage to see any significant drop).

My max HR was at least 186 in 2000, probably even as high as 190. In 2004, I found myself unable to get it above 170.
